Description
Delicious baked apple donuts filled with a homemade apple pie filling and topped with a cinnamon sugar mixture. Perfect for breakfast or as a sweet treat!

- 1 1/4 cup diced gala apples (about 2–3 medium apples)
- 1 ½ tbsp salted butter (for filling)
- 3 tbsp brown sugar (for filling)
- 1 tsp apple pie spice (for filling)
- 1 tbsp all purpose flour (for filling)
- 1 ½ cups all purpose flour (for donuts)
- 1 ½ tsp baking powder (for donuts)
- ½ tsp baking soda (for donuts)
- ¾ cup brown sugar (for donuts)
- 2 eggs (for donuts)
- ¾ cup low fat buttermilk (for donuts)
- 3 tbsp salted butter, melted (for donuts)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (for donuts)
- 1 tsp apple pie spice (for donuts)
- ¼ cup white granulated sugar (for topping)
- 1 tbsp cinnamon (for topping)
- 2 tbsp salted butter, melted (for topping)
Instructions
- For the apple pie filling, peel, core, and dice the apples.
- In a sauce pot over medium heat, add butter and sugar, mixing well.
- Add diced apples, flour, and apple pie spice, then mix well and cover. Lower the heat to medium-low and cook until the apples are softened, stirring every few minutes.
- Remove from heat and let cool.
- Preheat oven to 350℉ and grease a donut pan.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, sugar, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla until smooth.
- Sift in all dry ingredients and whisk until fully incorporated.
- Add the cooled apple pie filling mixture and mix well using a spatula.
- Transfer the batter into a piping bag.
- Cut the tip off the piping bag and fill the donut cups, then bake for 11-12 minutes.
- Let donuts cool on a wire rack.
- For the cinnamon sugar topping, melt butter and mix sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl.
- Brush the top of each donut with butter and dip into the cinnamon sugar mixture. Repeat with all donuts.
Notes
- Use gala apples for the best flavor.
- Ensure the filling is not too hot before mixing it into the batter.
- Using a piping bag will help fill the donut cups more easily.
- Adjust baking time if your donuts are not fully cooked after 12 minutes.
