Description
Create dazzling crystal blooms using simple materials in this fun STEM craft.
Ingredients
- Borax powder: 3 tbsp per cup of water
- Pipe cleaners: bright colors work best!
- Food coloring: optional for vibrant crystals
- Large glass jar: heat-safe, like a mason jar
- Pencil or chopstick: to suspend your flowers
- String or fishing line
- Boiling water: 1 cup per flower
Instructions
- Shape Your Flowers: Twist pipe cleaners into simple flower shapes (roses, daisies, or abstract designs). Leave space between petals for crystals to grow.
- Suspend Them: Tie string to each flower, then secure the other end to a pencil, ensuring flowers hang freely in the jar.
- Mix the Magic Solution: For each cup of boiling water, stir in 3 tbsp Borax until fully dissolved. Optionally add 2–3 drops of food coloring and swirl.
- Submerge & Wait: Lower flowers into the solution and let jars sit undisturbed overnight (12+ hours) for denser crystals.
- Reveal & Dry: The next morning, gently lift out your glistening flowers, tap off excess crystals, and air-dry on a paper towel.
Notes
- Layer colors: Use multicolored pipe cleaners or dip petals in different colored solutions.
- Speed up growth: Use more Borax (up to 4 tbsp/cup) for denser crystals.
- Gift them: Display in tiny vases or attach to gift boxes for a science-meets-romantic touch!
