Description

A captivating, glowing storm in a jar that mimics lightning and thunder with swirling colors perfect for science fun and mesmerizing displays!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 clear glass jar with lid
  • Water (enough to fill about 3/4 of the jar)
  • Vegetable oil (enough to fill the rest of the jar)
  • Glow-in-the-dark paint or glow sticks (non-toxic)
  • Blue and purple food coloring
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets or fizzing tablets
  • Small funnel (optional)
  • Spoon or craft stick for mixing

Instructions

  1. Fill the Jar: Pour water into the jar until it’s about three-quarters full. Add a few drops of blue and purple food coloring.
  2. Add Vegetable Oil: Slowly pour vegetable oil into the jar until nearly full. Let the liquids settle and separate.
  3. Add Glow: Mix in glow-in-the-dark paint or carefully add liquid from glow sticks. Stir gently to distribute glow.
  4. Create the Storm: Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into small pieces and drop one into the jar. Watch glowing bubbles rise and fall, creating a stormy effect.
  5. Repeat: Add more tablet pieces as needed for continuous glowing storms.

Notes

  • Use a Blacklight: Enhance the glowing effect by placing the jar under a blacklight.
  • Seal Securely: Glue or tape the lid shut if children will handle the jar.
  • Try Different Colors: Experiment with different food coloring combos for unique storm colors.
