Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup corn syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon flavoring (like vanilla or peppermint)
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, combine sugar, cornstarch, water, corn syrup, and salt.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring continuously until the mixture comes to a boil.
  3. Reduce the heat and let it boil without stirring until it reaches 270°F (hard ball stage) on a candy thermometer.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in flavoring and food coloring.
  5. Pour the mixture onto a greased surface and let it cool slightly.
  6. Once cool enough to handle, butter your hands.
  7. Begin pulling and stretching the taffy until it becomes shiny and smooth.
  8. Roll the taffy into long strips and cut into bite-sized pieces.
  9. Wrap each piece in wax paper and enjoy!

Notes

  • If the taffy is too sticky, dust your hands and the surface with cornstarch to make it easier to handle.
  • Experiment with different flavorings and colors to create a variety of taffy treats for any occasion.
