Description
A delicious and easy recipe for homemade sloppy joes, perfect for a family meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon mustard
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup water
- 4 hamburger buns
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until browned and fully cooked through, about 6-8 minutes.
- Drain any excess fat from the beef, then return the skillet to the heat.
- Add the chopped onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the beef.
- Cook the vegetables, stirring occasionally, until they are softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Add the water to the skillet and stir the mixture well to combine all the ingredients.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
- Let the sloppy joe mixture simmer gently, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- While the mixture simmers, slice the hamburger buns in half.
- Toast the buns in a separate pan or under a broiler until they are golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
- Once the sloppy joe mixture has thickened and the flavors have melded, remove it from the heat.
- Spoon the mixture generously onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns.
- Top each sloppy joe with the other half of the bun.
- Serve immediately while hot and enjoy!
Notes
- Feel free to adjust the spices according to your taste.
- For a healthier option, you can substitute ground turkey for ground beef.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
