Description

A delicious and easy recipe for homemade sloppy joes, perfect for a family meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 4 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until browned and fully cooked through, about 6-8 minutes.
  3. Drain any excess fat from the beef, then return the skillet to the heat.
  4. Add the chopped onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the beef.
  5. Cook the vegetables, stirring occasionally, until they are softened, about 5 minutes.
  6. Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, salt, and black pepper.
  7. Add the water to the skillet and stir the mixture well to combine all the ingredients.
  8. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
  9. Let the sloppy joe mixture simmer gently, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  10. While the mixture simmers, slice the hamburger buns in half.
  11. Toast the buns in a separate pan or under a broiler until they are golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
  12. Once the sloppy joe mixture has thickened and the flavors have melded, remove it from the heat.
  13. Spoon the mixture generously onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns.
  14. Top each sloppy joe with the other half of the bun.
  15. Serve immediately while hot and enjoy!

Notes
