- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 4 cups vegetable broth
- Salt & pepper (to taste)
- Fresh herbs for garnish (thyme, rosemary, or parsley)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Onions
- Peel 4 large onions and trim the tops, but keep the root intact to hold them together.
- Place the onions in a large pot and pour in 4 cups of vegetable broth.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
2. Boil the Onions
- Bring the broth to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the onions simmer for 30-40 minutes until fork-tender.
3. Add Butter
- Remove the onions from the pot and place them on a serving platter.
- Top each onion with a tablespoon of butter, letting it melt over the warm onions for extra richness.
4. Garnish & Serve
- Sprinkle with fresh herbs (thyme, rosemary, or parsley) for added flavor.
- Serve warm as a delicious side dish alongside grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or crusty bread.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add a bay leaf or a splash of white wine to the broth while simmering.
- Make it dairy-free by using plant-based butter or a drizzle of olive oil.
- Use different onions – Sweet onions work best, but you can also try yellow, red, or pearl onions for variety.
