Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground turkey (93% lean)
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp lime juice
- 1 tbsp chopped cilantro
- 1 tsp chili powder (for sauce)
- 1/2 tsp cumin (for sauce)
- 1/4 tsp smoked paprika (for sauce)
- Salt and pepper to taste (for sauce)
- 4 burger buns
- 1 avocado, sliced
- 1 tomato, sliced
- 4 leaves of lettuce
- 1 small red onion, sliced
- 1 white onion, sliced (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine ground turkey with chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined, avoiding overworking the meat.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into patties approximately 1cm thick. Create a small indentation in the center of each patty to prevent bulging during cooking.
- Place formed patties on a plate and refrigerate for 30 minutes to help them firm up and hold their shape during cooking.
- Preheat grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 5-7 minutes per side until they reach an internal temperature of 74°C (165°F) and are no longer pink in the center.
- While patties cook, combine mayonnaise, lime juice, chopped cilantro, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper in a small bowl. Stir until well integrated.
- Place burger buns cut-side down on the grill or in a skillet over medium heat for 1-2 minutes until lightly golden brown.
- Spread southwest sauce on the bottom bun, then layer with cooked turkey patty, avocado slices, tomato, lettuce, and onion. Cap with the top bun and serve immediately.
Notes
- For spicier burgers, increase the amount of cayenne pepper.
- Using fresh ingredients in the southwest sauce will enhance the flavor.
- Feel free to customize toppings according to personal preference.
