Description

Texas Toast Sloppy Joes is a hearty and delicious twist on the classic sloppy joe served on thick slices of toasted Texas bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices Texas toast
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small red onion, diced
  • 1/2 small green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add diced onion and green bell pepper along with a pinch of salt and pepper. Sauté for 5 minutes or until the vegetables soften.
  2. Add ground beef to the skillet and break it into small pieces while browning. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Stir in tomato paste, tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Combine thoroughly and let the sauce simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to 220°C (425°F). Place Texas toast on a baking tray and bake for 6–8 minutes until lightly toasted. Use the back of a spoon to create an indent in the center of each slice.
  5. Fill the center of each Texas toast slice with the sloppy Joe mixture and top with shredded cheddar cheese.
  6. Place the assembled toast back in the oven and bake for 5 minutes or until the cheese has melted. Let cool slightly and garnish with chopped parsley, if desired.

Notes

  • Feel free to add more vegetables like mushrooms or jalapeños for additional flavor.
  • For a spicier version, add hot sauce to the meat mixture.
  • Cheddar cheese can be substituted with other cheese varieties of your choice.
