Description
Texas Toast Sloppy Joes is a hearty and delicious twist on the classic sloppy joe served on thick slices of toasted Texas bread.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 slices Texas toast
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small red onion, diced
- 1/2 small green bell pepper, diced
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1/4 cup tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add diced onion and green bell pepper along with a pinch of salt and pepper. Sauté for 5 minutes or until the vegetables soften.
- Add ground beef to the skillet and break it into small pieces while browning. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Stir in tomato paste, tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Combine thoroughly and let the sauce simmer for 10 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 220°C (425°F). Place Texas toast on a baking tray and bake for 6–8 minutes until lightly toasted. Use the back of a spoon to create an indent in the center of each slice.
- Fill the center of each Texas toast slice with the sloppy Joe mixture and top with shredded cheddar cheese.
- Place the assembled toast back in the oven and bake for 5 minutes or until the cheese has melted. Let cool slightly and garnish with chopped parsley, if desired.
Notes
- Feel free to add more vegetables like mushrooms or jalapeños for additional flavor.
- For a spicier version, add hot sauce to the meat mixture.
- Cheddar cheese can be substituted with other cheese varieties of your choice.
