Description

Delicious homemade apple butter cinnamon rolls topped with creamy frosting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 envelope active dry yeast (1 tablespoon)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs (beaten)
  • 6 tablespoons butter (melted and slightly cooled)
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup apple butter
  • ½ cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • ¾ cup cream cheese
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Get your ingredients ready. A stand mixer with the dough hook attachment makes it easy to knead the dough, but you can also knead it by hand.
  2. Activate the yeast according to package directions until bubbly.
  3. Whisk in remaining milk, sugar, eggs, and melted butter into the activated yeast.
  4. In a stand mixer bowl, combine flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and knead until dough is soft and stretchy.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size (45 to 60 minutes).
  6. Punch dough down, roll into a rectangle, and spread apple butter evenly over it. Sprinkle sugar and cinnamon mix over apple butter.
  7. Roll up the dough jelly-roll style and slice into 12 rounds. Arrange in a greased baking pan and let rise again (20-30 minutes).
  8. Preheat oven to 350°F and bake rolls for 18-25 minutes until golden.
  9. While rolls cool, beat frosting ingredients and spread over warm rolls.
  10. Serve warm or enjoy cold the next day.

Notes

  • The yeast should be foamy after activation; if not, discard and start over with fresh yeast.
  • The dough should feel soft and slightly tacky but not overly sticky.
  • For cutting the rolls, use a sharp knife or unflavored dental floss.
  • Keep an eye on the rolls while baking to prevent overbaking.
