Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 8-inch or 9-inch round cake pans, then set them aside.
- In a bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk the sugar, eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth and glossy.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring just until combined.
- Pour in the hot water and whisk gently until the batter is smooth.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- To make the chocolate frosting, beat the softened butter until creamy, then mix in the cocoa powder.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, alternating with heavy cream or milk, and beat until fluffy and spreadable.
- Mix in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt.
- Place one cooled cake layer on a serving plate and frost the top before adding the second layer.
- Frost the top and sides of the cake and decorate with chocolate chips, shaved chocolate, berries, or any special toppings.
