Description
Flavorful Firecracker Hot Dogs are a delicious twist on the classic hot dog, featuring a spicy-sweet glaze and a crunchy slaw.
Ingredients
Scale
- For the firecracker glaze:
- 1/4 cup sriracha sauce
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water (slurry)
- For the hot dogs:
- 8 beef or pork hot dogs (all-beef recommended)
- 8 hot dog buns
- For the crunchy slaw:
- 2 cups shredded green cabbage
- 1 cup shredded carrot
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- For garnish (optional):
- Sliced green onions
- Sesame seeds (white or black)
- Extra sriracha
Instructions
- Make the crunchy slaw: In a medium bowl, combine shredded cabbage, shredded carrot, rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Toss together and set aside.
- Make the firecracker glaze: In a small saucepan, combine sriracha, honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Whisk together and heat until simmering. Mix cornstarch with water and add to sauce, whisking until thickened. Remove from heat.
- Prepare the hot dogs: Cut shallow slits in an angle along each hot dog about halfway through.
- Grill the hot dogs: Preheat grill to medium-high and cook hot dogs for 2 to 3 minutes per side until heated through and with char marks.
- Glaze the hot dogs: Brush the firecracker glaze over the hot dogs and cook for an additional 1 minute until sticky and caramelized.
- Toast the buns (optional): Grill hot dog buns cut side down for 30 seconds to 1 minute until lightly toasted.
- Assemble the hot dogs: Place a glazed hot dog in each toasted bun, top with crunchy slaw, green onions, and sesame seeds. Drizzle with extra sriracha if desired.
- Serve: Enjoy the hot dogs warm, and provide extra napkins for a messier experience.
Notes
- Cutting slits in the hot dogs allows the glaze to soak in.
- Do not skip the cornstarch slurry; it helps the glaze stick.
- Use all-beef hot dogs for better flavor.
- Make slaw and glaze ahead of time and refrigerate.
- If no grill is available, use a cast-iron skillet or griddle.
- These hot dogs can also be served with a fried egg on top.
