Description

Sweet Potato Butter Swim Biscuits are a delicious baked treat made with mashed yams and topped with a honey cinnamon glaze, perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup (1 stick) melted unsalted butter
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour (do not pack flour, use spoon and level method)
  • 1 ½ cups whole milk
  • 6 Tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup drained canned yams, mashed (measured before mashing)
  • ¼ cup (½ stick) melted unsalted butter for glaze
  • ⅛ cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon for glaze

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (yes, that is the correct temperature.) To a 9×9-inch baking dish add 1/2 cup (1 stick) melted unsalted butter. Set aside.
  2. In a bowl add 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour, 1 ½ cups whole milk, 6 Tablespoons light brown sugar, 1 Tablespoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1 teaspoon nutmeg. Mix until combined.
  3. Add 1 cup drained canned yams, mashed. Mix until just combined.
  4. Transfer the dough to the baking dish. Press the batter evenly in the baking dish.
  5. Cut the dough into 9 squares.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes (on the middle oven rack) and rotate the dish once during baking (about halfway through).
  7. While the biscuits are baking, prepare the glaze by mixing ¼ cup (½ stick) melted unsalted butter, ⅛ cup honey, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon in a bowl.
  8. Pour or brush the cinnamon honey butter glaze on top.
  9. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • Using canned yams is acceptable, but they should be drained and mashed for proper measurement.
  • Adjust baking time based on your oven’s performance.
  • For a richer taste, try using brown butter in place of regular melted butter.
